Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQ page! Here, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions about our massage therapy services. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help!

Why do you require a phone consultation before scheduling?

All new clients begin with a brief phone consultation to help ensure that massage therapy is appropriate, safe, and supportive for your current needs.

During this 10–15 minute conversation, we’ll review relevant medical history, treatment or recovery status, and any specific concerns you may have. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and make sure this type of care feels like the right fit for you.

Phone consultations are provided at no cost and help ensure that sessions are thoughtfully planned and individualized from the start.

To begin, please email or text with a few times you’re available for a call.

What types of massage do you offer?

My practice specializes in oncology-informed massage therapy for individuals impacted by cancer, including those in active treatment, recovery, and survivorship. Sessions are carefully adapted to medical history, treatment side effects, and how you’re feeling on the day of care, with a focus on comfort, safety, and support.

While my specialty is oncology-informed care, I also work with clients managing chronic pain or complex medical needs who benefit from careful assessment and individualized treatment.

I also offer breast and chest massage for individuals who have experienced breast or chest surgery, including cancer treatment, reconstruction, or gender-affirming procedures. This work is gentle, trauma-informed, and focused on mobility, scar support, and restoring ease in the body.

In addition, I provide oncology-informed manual lymphatic drainage to support lymphatic health following surgery, radiation, or other cancer-related treatments.

Other gentle techniques – such as scar tissue massage or lymphatic support – may be incorporated into sessions when appropriate, but are not booked as separate services.

Care is provided using respectful, inclusive language and individualized assessment for each client.

What is oncology massage?

Oncology massage is a gentle, adaptive form of massage designed specifically for people affected by cancer. It takes into account your current health, treatment history, and energy levels to create a session that is safe, supportive, and deeply comforting. Whether you’re in treatment now or have been in remission for years, this session can help restore comfort and ease in your body.

Is massage safe during chemotherapy, radiation, or other treatments?

Yes. When performed by a trained oncology massage therapist, massage can be safe and beneficial during treatment. Rachel is experienced in adjusting for medical devices, recent surgeries, fatigue, fragile skin, lymph node removal, and more. Your comfort and safety are always the top priority.

What are the benefits of oncology massage?

Massage during or after cancer treatment may help:

  • Reduce anxiety and promote relaxation
  • Ease muscle tension and joint stiffness
  • Support sleep and restfulness
  • Relieve nausea or pain in some clients
  • Gently reconnect you with your body in a safe, calming way

Everyone’s experience is different, and your session is tailored to your needs.

Do I need a referral or permission from my doctor?

Not always. Many clients come on their own, but if you’re unsure, please ask your provider. If there are any concerns, such as a recent surgery, clotting risk, or side effects, Rachel can work with you to determine the best timing and approach.

What happens during an oncology massage session?

Sessions are quiet, slow, and respectful. You’ll talk with Rachel first about how you’re feeling that day, then you’ll be gently positioned for comfort – often on your back, side, or in a reclining position, if lying on your stomach is not appropriate or comfortable. Massage may include the full body, or focus only on certain areas, depending on your energy and needs.

What if I have a port, lymphedema, or other medical concerns?

Rachel has training in working safely with medical devices, radiation sites, surgical scars, and lymphedema risk. Every session is customized based on your unique situation, with care taken to avoid any contraindicated areas. If you have acute lymphedema, you should work with a certified lymphedema therapist for lymphedema management. Our sessions can support the work you do with the therapist.

Can I receive massage if I’m very fatigued or emotionally overwhelmed?

Yes. Oncology massage can be as minimal as you need—sometimes just holding the feet or gentle handwork is enough to help you feel less overwhelmed and ready for a session. It’s perfectly okay to cry, be quiet, or even fall asleep during your session. You will never be expected to perform or “show up” a certain way.

How do I book a session?

All new clients begin with a brief phone consultation before scheduling. Please email or text with a few times you’re available for a call.

Returning clients may schedule by contacting me directly.

What is the “Pay What You Can” massage?

A limited number of 30-minute oncology massage sessions are offered to clients currently undergoing cancer treatment on a Pay What You Can basis. Availability is supported through donations. Please reach out directly if you would like more information.

What should I expect during my first massage?

Prior to your consultation call, you will receive an email with a link to fill out your Intake Form. This form includes a brief health history and your current complaints/issues to address. Please fill out this form prior to the scheduled call. Your first visit will begin with a brief consultation to discuss any recent changes to your health, any areas of concern, and what you hope to achieve from the massage. From there, your therapist will tailor the session to your needs. You’ll be draped with a sheet or towel at all times, ensuring your comfort and privacy.

What should I wear?

You can wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Most client will undress to their comfort, remaining under the sheets throughout the session. Adaptive positioning, pillows, and blankets are always used to support your body gently and respectfully.

After Your Appointment

How often should I get a massage?

This depends on your individual needs and goals. Some clients benefit from weekly sessions, while others find that once a month or every other month works best. Your therapist can work out a plan for you based on your goals and individual needs.

Should I tip my massage therapist?

Tips are never expected. If offered, they help support the availability of Pay What You Can oncology massage sessions for those in need. If you are need of this program, please contact me by email, phone or text for more information.

Are there any conditions that would prevent me from getting a massage?

Certain conditions like fever, infections, or recent surgeries might require you to postpone your massage. Massage is not appropriate for infectious illnesses or acute injuries that have not been assessed by a physician. Please inform your therapist of any health concerns or recent injuries so they can adjust the session accordingly.
